PERFORMANCE
(Golf, Tennis and more...)
On any given day, who decides whether Tiger Woods
will play well enough to win a golf tournament?
What really determines whether Roger Federer will
win a specific tennis championship? How about
Maria Sharapova? Or James Blake, Andy
Roddick, or Marat Safin?
Closer
to home, what determines how well YOU play your
sport?
Is
it physical conditioning? Number of hours of practice?
Age? Experience? Motivation? The coach? NO. Each
of these is definitely important, but not the
determining factor.
The
most crucial factor in whether athletes perform
to the limits of their capability is their
current mental and emotional state. All professional
athletes are capable of making a “perfect
shot” from time to time. The ideal passing
shot down the line. The Ace serve. The perfect
drive, putt, pass, backhand, field goal, pitch,
or free throw. The problem is, none of them make
that exact shot every time they attempt it. Their
body can do it—it’s done it many times before.
Their muscle memory is capable of making whatever
shot they need. So why can’t they do it on command?
Every single time?
The
answer is that they lose their concentration.
Their focus. They lose their confidence. Or they
try too hard. In other words, their conscious
minds get in the way.
An
experienced athlete’s subconscious mind
has all the information necessary to make an outstanding
shot or play with every single attempt. Their
conscious mind doesn’t have this information.
When they THINK about how to strike the golf ball,
tennis ball, football, etc, they’ll fail.
The conscious mind can’t possibly coordinate
the proper breathing, stance, grip, footwork,
and thousands of muscle contractions or relaxations
necessary to perform expertly. That comes after
hours of practice and repetition, when the subconscious
mind takes over and coordinates every essential
component. Learning a new activity is
difficult because it requires using the conscious
mind. Once the subconscious takes over, excellence
is easy. Outstanding performance becomes second
nature UNLESS and UNTIL the conscious mind re-inserts
itself into the process. Or some emotional disturbance
interferes—typically anxiety, fear, frustration,
or anger.
How
hard is it for you to make a five foot putt on
a level green? That’s easy, right? Okay,
how tough might that putt become if you stand
to win or lose $100,000? Remember, it’ll
cost you one hundred thousand dollars cash if
you miss. One putt. Will you be able to dismiss
that possibility as you strike the ball? Will
your hands tremble, or your knees go weak? Will
your palms be all sweaty?
Consider another example: An outstanding tennis
player who’s won many championship matches
has been defeated for three consecutive years
in Arthur Ashe stadium in Flushing Meadows, NY.
He’s now in the men’s semifinals at
the U.S. Open, and his match has just been reassigned
to what court? You guessed it, Arthur Ashe stadium.
In a fifth-set tiebreaker against the world’s
number one player, will it cross this man’s
mind that he has never before been able to win
in Arthur Ashe stadium? What is it about him and
this court? Is he jinxed somehow? Is this likely
to affect his shots? His confidence? His focus?
Can he prevent his conscious mind from inserting
itself into his play?
Tennis
is a mental game. Golf is a mental game. All athletic
competitions that require study, thought, strategy,
and planning are mental games. But they also depend
upon execution. Proper execution demands that
the conscious mind step aside to allow the subconscious
to do its job. And emotions influence both the
conscious and subconscious minds. Positive emotions
smooth things along. Negative emotions interfere.
